Twitter Suffers Latest Outage Since Elon Musk’s $44bn Takeover, Impeding User Ability to Post for Almost an Hour
On Wednesday at 10pm GMT, many Twitter users reported being unable to tweet as they received a message indicating they had reached their daily limit, even though they had not posted anything that day.
The recent Twitter outage impacted not only the creation of new tweets but also retweets, replies, and access to direct messages, according to user reports.
To overcome the outage, some users found a solution by scheduling their tweets to post one minute in the future. The platform eventually resumed service at nearly 11pm GMT, but direct messages were still unavailable at the time of reporting.
At the time of writing, Tweetdeck, a Twitter-owned service that provides the ability to view multiple Twitter columns in browsers, remains unavailable. There have been speculations that it will become exclusive to Twitter Blue subscribers, but the company has yet to confirm this.
Since Elon Musk took over the company, Twitter no longer has a press department. However, The Guardian sent questions to an email address that the company has previously used for press inquiries.
According to US tech publication The Information, Elon Musk instructed Twitter staff to halt “new feature development” in order to prioritize stability on the platform during the outage.
The disruption occurred just a few hours after Twitter introduced a new product for Twitter Blue subscribers that enables them to send tweets with a maximum of 4,000 characters. Additionally, the company was in the process of ending its free access to the Application Programming Interface (API) on February 9th.
The alteration will result in the termination of multiple services, including Twitter thread readers, automated replies, and automatic tweet deletion services.
