{"id":1030,"date":"2022-11-25T20:47:54","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T20:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yareport.com\/?p=1030"},"modified":"2022-11-25T20:47:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T20:47:54","slug":"san-francisco-police-propose-using-robots-capable-of-lethal-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yareport.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/25\/san-francisco-police-propose-using-robots-capable-of-lethal-force\/","title":{"rendered":"San Francisco police propose using robots capable of lethal force"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The San Francisco police department has proposed that it be allowed to use robots with lethal force while responding to incidents, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=11449771&amp;GUID=9FC57C5A-6E68-4485-A989-632C3837B909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"policy draft\">policy draft<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remote controlled devices are generally used for area inspection and bomb disposal, a police spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2022\/11\/killer-robots-to-be-permitted-under-sfpd-draft-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Mission Local\">Mission Local<\/a>. The department wants to use them for <strong>\u201ctraining and simulations, criminal apprehensions, critical incidents, exigent circumstances, executing a warrant or during suspicious device assessments\u201d, <\/strong>according to the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarysystems-tech.com\/sites\/militarysystems\/files\/supplier_docs\/\/Andros%20HD.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Newer Remotec model robots\">Newer Remotec model robots<\/a> have an optional weapons system, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/11\/23\/23475817\/san-francisco-police-department-robots-deadly-force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"the Verge,\">the Verge,<\/a> and its model <strong>F5A<\/strong> can load shotgun shells often used in bomb detonation. A model in use by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army-technology.com\/projects\/talon-tracked-military-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"US army\">US army<\/a> can be modified to add <strong>machine guns and grenade launchers<\/strong>, according to the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SFPD proposal would allow these <strong>robots to kill people<\/strong> \u201cwhen risk of loss of life to members of the public or officers is imminent and outweighs any other force option available to SFPD\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Verge, the <strong>original version of the draft<\/strong> did not mention &#8220;deadly force&#8221; until a member of the city\u2019s board of supervisors added that <strong>\u201crobots shall not be used as a Use of Force against any person\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department struck the phrase out and rephrased it to the statement justifying deadly force in the face of imminent danger and lack of other options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A version of the document has been approved by the board of supervisors rules committee.
