{"id":928,"date":"2022-10-13T07:39:55","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T07:39:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yareport.com\/?p=928"},"modified":"2022-10-13T07:44:39","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T07:44:39","slug":"archaeologists-find-hundreds-of-skeletons-found-beneath-an-old-pembrokeshire-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yareport.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/13\/archaeologists-find-hundreds-of-skeletons-found-beneath-an-old-pembrokeshire-store\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of skeletons found beneath an old Pembrokeshire store"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The remains of more than 240 people, including 100 children, have been discovered beneath a former department store in Pembrokeshire among the ruins of a medieval priory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archaeologists believe they have discovered the remnants of St Saviour\u2019s Priory underneath the former Ocky White store in Haverfordwest, which closed in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The priory has been described as \u201ca significant complex of buildings\u201d with dormitories, scriptoriums, stables and a hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site supervisor, Andrew Shobbrook, from Dyfed Archaeological Trust, said: \u201cIt\u2019s quite a prestigious place to be buried. You have a range of people, from the wealthy to general townsfolk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the bodies have head injuries, consistent with battle injuries, and the wounds could have been caused by arrows or musket balls, Shobbrook told the broadcaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About half the remains are those of children, a reflection of their high mortality rate at the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-wales-63193600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"the BBC reported\">the BBC reported<\/a>. One theory is that the victims could date from an attack by French and Welsh forces, led by rebel leader Owain Glynd\u0175r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cNever in my wildest dreams did I think I would be involved in something so big. The site is showing itself to be massive part of the history of Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire. It can be slightly overwhelming at times but it\u2019s also quite humbling to be part of that person\u2019s journey.\u201d<\/p><cite>Archaeologist Gaby Lester said<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It is thought that the site may have been used as a burial ground all the way up to the 18th century. The friary of Dominican Order is believed to have stood in Haverfordwest for three centuries.
