{"id":963,"date":"2022-10-19T00:57:18","date_gmt":"2022-10-19T00:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yareport.com\/?p=963"},"modified":"2022-10-19T00:57:18","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T00:57:18","slug":"meta-to-sell-giphy-after-uk-watchdog-confirms-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yareport.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/19\/meta-to-sell-giphy-after-uk-watchdog-confirms-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta to sell Giphy after UK watchdog confirms ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Meta has been ordered by the UK competition watchdog to sell the gif creation website Giphy, the first time the regulator has blocked a deal struck by a big Silicon Valley company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Competition and Markets Authority told Meta in November that the only way to resolve competition concerns was to dispose of Giphy, the largest supplier of animated gifs to social networks such as Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter, which it acquired two years ago for $400 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta appealed against the decision, which the regulator said would \u201cprotect millions of social media users\u201d and stop Meta \u201cincreasing its significant power in social media\u201d,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CMA conducted an \u201cexpedited review\u201d of its original ruling, which included new submissions from Giphy and Meta, and on Tuesday it said it stood by its order to sell the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulator said Meta would be able to increase its \u201calready significant market power\u201d by cutting off the supply of gifs to rivals, or demand more user data from them in order to keep using Giphy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta said it accepted Tuesday\u2019s CMA decision as the final word on the matter and would sell off Giphy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Facebook parent company, which also owns Instagram and the messaging service WhatsApp, accounts for 73% of user time spent on social media in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThis deal would significantly reduce competition in two markets. It has already resulted in the removal of a potential challenger in the UK display ad market, while also giving Meta the ability to further increase its substantial market power in social media,\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cThe only way this can be addressed is by the sale of Giphy. This will promote innovation in digital advertising, and also ensure UK social media users continue to benefit from access to Giphy.\u201d<\/p><cite>Said Stuart McIntosh, the chair of the independent inquiry group that carried out the remittal investigation.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The watchdog said it was \u201cparticularly concerning\u201d that Meta terminated Giphy\u2019s advertising services, which the company was poised to expand, at the time of the merger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CMA and Meta have been at loggerheads through the investigation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cWe are disappointed by the CMA\u2019s decision but accept today\u2019s ruling as the final word on the matter,.
